Out & About In Wimberley
Location
On Ranch Road 12, 15 miles NW of San Marcos, 45 miles SW of Austin, and 60 miles NE of San Antonio, Wimberley is nestled in the hills and valleys where Cypress Creek flows into the Blanco River, known in it's early years as the Cypress Fork of the Rio Blanco.
Terrain
Standing at approximately 1000-1100 feet above sea level, Wimberley owes its geological formations to a period 100 million years ago, during which, Texas was under water, completely covered by shallow inland seas that deposited large layers of limey mud. These deposits now make up the limestone, or white rock, that both towers over the Blanco River and forms the smooth bottom beneath the water.
Climate
With its hot summers and mostly mild winters (we do get to slip around in ice and sleet, occasionally!), Wimberley offers an annual average of 300 days of sunshine and 37" of rainfall. Frost dates are November 30 through March 30.
Population
Newly incorporated, Wimberley has no accurate population count, but the Post Office delivers to approximately 9000 people in the incorporated village and surrounding area.
County
Hays County is located in South Central Texas between Austin and San Antonio. The land area is 670 square miles. The county seat is San Marcos. The Balcones Fault Line Escarpment splits Hays County into contrasting regions. The scenic canyons traverse hill country ranching sections on the west side and rich gently rolling blackland prairie farm lands on the east side.

Known as a wonderful get-away place and family retreat area, Wimberley offers a large Bed & Breakfast selection where you can enjoy peace and privacy or participate in many activities.

Wimberley residents volunteer for the Fire Department and Emergency Medical Service and they are a dedicated, courageous and caring group of people; not to mention award-winning to boot. Our community is both proud and lucky to have them. Both groups respond to the County 911 service.

Wimberley offers full-time Doctors, Dentists and Chiropractors. San Marcos is the closest hospital, with Austin a close second.
Churches
Wimberley is blessed with a wide variety of church affiliations, from Baptist to Non-Denominational, all attended by folks who would invite visitors and new members alike to come and worship with them.
Various Things of Interest
Wimberley offers a multitude of fun and interesting things to do, these listed below encompassing only a few of them.
- Shopping in the Town Square - selections vary widely from artist to craftsman to shops full of interesting things to remind you of your time spent here.
- Market Days - a monthly gathering of over 450 vendors displaying their wares, from the very old to the brand new and the hand-crafted; beginning the first Saturday of each month in April and continuing through December.
- Corral Theatre - our unique "step-back-in-time" outdoor, lawnchair, quilt-on-the-ground movie theatre, open from the end of school in May to beginning again in August. Watch your favorite movie under the stars and remember the by-gone days of the drive-in theatre.
- Pioneer Town - a re-creation of an old western town with all the trimmings, plus good food in their Silver Spoon Cafe. This is a great place for family vacations, personal retreats or business meetings, offering the Blanco River to play in and plenty of ways to just relax and rejuvenate.
- Crawfish Festival - on the town square at Cypress Creek Cafe, 2001 was the 20th anni- \\versary of this event. Lots of crawfish, shrimp, gumbo and all the trimmings, along with live music throughout the day and into the evening - this is a great all-day activity.
- Glass-blowing Demonstrations at the Wimberley Glass Works - their beautiful designs are not to be believed until you see them, especially as they are being created right in front of your eyes.
- Pie Social - a not-to-be missed event if you are a pie lover! The pies are baked by the Wimberley ladies and a raffle is held for a unique hand-made quilt donated by local merchants. All proceeds benefit the Winters-Wimberley House and the Wimberley Institute of Cultures. The Winters-Wimberley House was recently restored to be used for community activities, such as this one, which brings everyone out for a good time and are also beneficial for Wimberley.
- Live Theatre Presentations by the Wimberley Players - great talent abounds in this area where people are so very creative and outgoing.
- Live Music - at several different locations during the week/weekend, from new talent being given a start to well-known artists and bands touring our area.
- Blue Hole Swimming and Camping - on the beautiful Cypress Creek for season pass and short-term campers.
